Opposition demands to cancel outcomes of Azerbaijani presidential election

Today, the Azerbaijani Central Election Commission (CEC) has announced the unconditional Ilham Aliev's victory at the presidential election. The oppositional "Musavat" Party has treated the election as illegitimate.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 11, Azerbaijan was voting at the early presidential election.

According to the preliminary totals, after treating the data from all the polling stations, Ilham Aliev has won 86.3% of the votes, the CEC has stated today.

Today, the "Musavat" Party has spread its opinion about the early presidential election, questioning the very legality thereof.

"The sudden appointment of the election was intended to set up a non-competitive ambient for Ilham Aliev to become president for the fourth term," Arif Gadjily, the head of the "Musavat" Party, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to his story, the election was held in an atmosphere of restriction of the freedom of assembly, the press, and association.

Oppositionists believe that no more than 20% of voters had actually participated in the voting.

The "Musavat" Party has treated "the election as unfair, unjust and undemocratic"; it has refused to recognize the executive power formed based on such election as legitimate, and demands to abolish the voting outcomes and to appoint a new election compliant with international standards.
