In Azerbaijan, 12 supporters of "Muslim Unity" sentenced to long prison terms
Today, in Baku, the court has found supporters of the movement "Muslim Unity" guilty under ten articles of the Criminal Code and sentenced them to long terms of imprisonment. The defence intends to challenge the verdict.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 26, 2015, during a special operation carried out in Nardaran, law enforcers detained 14 people, including Talekh Bagirzade, the leader of the movement "Muslim Unity". The detentions provoked unrests, during which seven people were killed, including two law enforcers. After that, mass arrests of supporters of the movement "Muslim Unity" and trials against them were held in Azerbaijan.
Today, the Baku Court on Grave Crimes has pronounced the verdicts to 12 members and supporters of the movement "Muslim Unity". The Court sentenced the defendants to 12-17 years of imprisonment, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by advocate Shakhla Gumbatova.
According to her, the defendants were found guilty under more than 10 articles of the Criminal Code, including preparations for terrorism, illegal arms trafficking, organization of riots, incitement of inter-religious strife, organization of actions that contribute to disturbance of public order, appeals against the state, attempts at forcible seizure of power, and creation of an illegal armed formation (IAF).
