On anniversary of attack on Nalchik, authorities promise to adapt militants

Today, Kabardino-Balkaria marks the Day to remember killed law enforcers. It coincides with the anniversary of the militant attack on Nalchik. The republic holds mourning events.

On October 13, 2005, during the attack on Nalchik, in total 35 law enforcers and servicemen, 14 civilians and 92 attackers were killed. The trial was running since 2008. On December 23, 2014, the Supreme Court (SC) of Kabardino-Balkaria sentenced five defendants in the case of the attack on Nalchik to life imprisonment, three others were released considering the term of imprisonment already served by them, and the rest were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment, from 9 to 23 years of imprisonment.

On October 12, on the eve of the Day to remember killed law enforcers, a briefing was held in Nalchik. It was attended by delegates from the authorities, religious figures, and members of NGOs, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

During the briefing, Zalim Kashirokov, Kabardino-Balkarian Minister for Prevention of Extremism, has noted that today, the situation in the republic "is fundamentally different from what happened in 2005, when militants attacked the city."

The Minister has emphasized that in Kabardino-Balkaria, "no explosions are heard, and the armed underground was liquidated." Therefore now, according to him, "the main emphasis is on preventive activities."

As far as the people sentenced in the case of the attack on Nalchik, then "one of them has already served his sentence," Zalim Kashirokov said. According to the Minister, "other 5-6 people should be released from prison in the near future."

"After their arrival from the places of detention, we will meet them, and we will render them assistance in their adaptation to peaceful life," the Minister has promised.
