Afghan Mukhtarly's wife asks Georgian MPs to investigate her husband's kidnapping

Leyla Mustafaeva, the spouse of Afghan Mukhtarly, and his advocate Archil Chopikashvili have appealed to the Georgian Parliament with a request to create a special commission to investigate the actions of the officials involved in the kidnapping of journalist Afghan Mukhtarly.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Afghan Mukhtarly, who left for Georgia in 2014, disappeared in Tbilisi on May 29. On May 30, he phoned his advocate and reported that he had been forcibly brought to Baku. On May 31, in Baku, the court arrested Afghan Mukhtarly for three months. The journalist was charged with violating the state border, smuggling and resisting a border guard. Afghan Mukhtarly denies the charges filed against him.

For the fifth month, the Georgian police and prosecutor's office cannot investigate the case on kidnapping of Afghan Mukhtarly, as well as the actions of the officials involved in his kidnapping. This was told on October 10 to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Leyla Mustafaeva, the journalist's wife.

"Therefore, we have appealed to the Parliament with a request to investigate my husband's case. The Georgian legislation gives us such a possibility," said Leyla Mustafaeva.

According to her, Afghan Mukhtarly was allowed to make phone calls only once a week.

Let us remind you that right after the kidnapping and arrest of Afghan Mukhtarly, the journalist's defence appealed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) with a request to consider in priority order a complaint about violation of the Afghan Mukhtarly's rights. The ECtHR has assigned the priority status to the Afghan Mukhtarly's case, and it will be considered as soon as possible.
