Native of Chechnya killed by car explosion in Kiev

Timur Makhauri, a citizen of Georgia, has perished in Kiev during a car explosion. He had fought in Ukraine as a member of the Chechen volunteer battalion, his acquaintances report.

According to Artyom Shevchenko, the press-secretary of the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), Makhauri has died today in central Kiev by the blast of an explosive device planted into the car.

Timur Makhauri was brought to justice in Ukraine in 2017, but concluded a deal with investigators, and was sentenced to a conditional term, the “Echo Moskvy” reports citing Mr Shevchenko, who also told the “112 Ukraine” TV Channel that Makhauri was a native of Chechnya and had been accused of illegal weapon possession.

According to Turkish law enforcers, Makhauri could be involved in the operation of Russian special services, as a result of which Shamil Basaev was killed, the "Kommersant" wrote on February 21, 2014.

The Makhauri’s wife and child were also in the blown up car; the woman was seriously wounded, and the child remained safe and sound, the “Meduza” reports citing the Ukrainian MIA.

According to one of Makhauri’s acquaintances, he served in the Chechen volunteer battalion named after Sheikh Mansur; while according to another acquaintance, in the battalion named after Djokhar Dudaev, the “Interfax-Ukraine” reports, adding, "Ramzan Kadyrov had called him his personal enemy; and he had been long hunted for," the edition quotes one of Makhauri’s colleagues.
