Belarus extradites Chechen native Imran Salamov to Russia

Belarus has denied refuge to Imran Salamov, a 40-year-old native of Chechnya, and sent him to Russia. This was reported by the organization "Human Constanta", engaged in providing assistance to refugees.

According to its information, on April 13, Imran Salamov was detained in Brest after Russia put him on the wanted list. A week later he appealed to the authorities of Belarus with a request for a refugee status and complained of torture in Chechnya.

On its Facebook page, the "Human Constanta" notes that "the expulsion is illegal," since the time period for challenging the refusal in asylum has not expired yet.

The organization decided to contact the Prosecutor's Office for verification. According to the "Human Constanta", in the period from 2004 to the first half of 2017, 86 citizens of the Russian Federation requested refugee status in Belarus, and none of them was granted it.

The main land route for Chechen refugees is to Poland via Belarus. Many seek to get from there to the western countries: to Germany, less often to Austria, France, Belgium, and Denmark. According to the Office for Foreigners in Poland, in the period from 2009 to May 2015, more than 39,000 Russian citizens, mostly natives of Chechnya, appealed for refugee status.
