Defence demands to investigate information on Giyas Ibragimov's torture at colony

An advocate of activist Giyas Ibragimov has appealed to the General Prosecutor's Office of Azerbaijan and to the Ombudsman with complaints about torture reported by his client.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the mother of Giyas Ibragimov claimed that he was beaten at the Baku penal colony No. 2. The penitentiary service denied the information about torture.

On July 8, advocate Elchin Sadygov visited Giyas Ibragimov in the penal colony. After his visit, the advocate claimed that his client's ear was too much swollen. Elchin Sadygov noted that Giyas Ibragimov "was subjected to inhuman treatment from his very first day at the penal colony."

According to officials from the Ombudsman's administration, the "issue concerning Giyas Ibragimov and his treatment" had been at the centre of the Ombudsman's attention since the time when the activist was placed to SIZO (pre-trial prison).

It should be noted that early this year, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) accepted the complaints of Ibragimov and Mamedov into the consideration. The international organization "Amnesty International" (AI) recognized Giyas Ibragimov as a "prisoner of conscience".
