ECtHR assigns priority status to Afghan Mukhtarly's case

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has considered the case "Afghan Mukhtarly versus Azerbaijan and Georgia" as a priority. This was reported by Archil Chopikashvili, an advocate of the journalist.

Journalist Afghan Mukhtarly disappeared on May 29 in Tbilisi. On May 30, he telephoned his advocate Nemat Kerimli and said that he was brought to Baku. According to Mukhtarly, during the kidnapping, he was exposed to violence and beatings.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the ECtHR proceeded to consider the complaint in the journalist Afghan Mukhtarly's case and started urgent communication with the Azerbaijani authorities.

The ECtHR has assigned the priority status to the Afghan Mukhtarly's case. That means it will be considered as soon as possible. This was reported by Archil Chopikashvili, an advocate of Afghan Mukhtarly, on July 7.

In the complaint sent to the European Court on June 2, the defence raised questions about violations of the Afghan Mukhtarly's rights under Article 3 (prohibition of torture), Article 5 (right to liberty and security of person), Article 6 (right to a fair trial), and Article 10 (freedom of expression) of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights. The main reason for the appeal to the ECtHR was the need to release Afghan Mukhtarly because of his poor health state, the "News-Georgia" reports.
