Zhalaudi Geriev celebrates his birthday behind bars

Today, Zhalaudi Geriev, a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, who is serving his sentence after the pronouncement of the verdict by the Chechen court, is celebrating his 24-year birthday behind bars. The "Caucasian Knot" treats the case against Zhalaudi Geriev as being fabricated and hopes for his release.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 28, 2016, the Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya upheld the verdict against Zhalaudi Geriev, who on September 5, 2016, was sentenced by the Shali District Court to three years of imprisonment on the charge of possession of marijuana.

Zhalaudi Geriev was born in the village of Kurchaloi in the Shali District of Chechnya. He graduated from the Faculty of History of the Chechen State University (ChSU). The journalist is nominated for the "Prize for Freedom of Expression 2017".

Since February 2014, Zhalaudi Geriev has been working as a correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot". Staff members of the edition remember and support him.

At present, Zhalaudi Geriev is awaiting the consideration by the Russian Supreme Court (SC) of a cassation appeal against his verdict. The Russian SC should eliminate the violations committed by the Chechen courts, defenders of Zhalaudi Geriev insist.

The lack of direct evidence of the Zhalaudi Geriev's guilt and the pressure on him during the investigation give reason to associate the criminal proceedings against him with his professional activities.

Earlier, the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" has recognized Zhalaudi Geriev as a political prisoner.
