Activists in Kalmykia support "Names Return" action
In Elista, the capital of Kalmykia, several activists joined the "Names Return" action of commemorating victims of political repressions.
On October 29, the "Names Return" action, during which activists read out the names of those repressed, was held in 134 cities, including Pyatigorsk, Yerevan, Vanadzor and Tbilisi. Volgograd activists moved the action to an earlier date for security reasons and held it on October 27 and 28.
Since 1991, October 30 has been marked in Russia as the Remembrance Day of Victims of Political Repressions. The 1930s in the USSR can be compared to the present day, when people end up in prison for their political views, Sochi residents pointed out at the time.
In Kalmykia, there were no significant public events on October 29-30 dedicated to the memory of the repressed people, a local activist has reported, adding that on October 30, the only small unofficial action was held, during which several people visited the memorial stone in Elista.
According to the activist, this time they recalled not only the victims of Stalin's repressions, but also those who were arrested recently, primarily Altan Ochirov, an activist, convicted on charges of spreading fakes about the Russian Army.
He has also emphasized the importance of such events for Kalmyks. "This is part of the tragedy of our nation. As is known, on December 28, 1943, all civilian Kalmyks were deported to Siberia ... We are, in fact, a repressed nation and we can't forget about this. And we can't forgive either," he has stated.
