US Department of State calls on Azerbaijani authorities to investigate Mekhman Galandarov's death

The Azerbaijani authorities should carry out complete and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the death of activist Mekhman Galandarov. This was stated by the US Department of State. The leader of the public alliance "Azerbaijan without Political Prisoners" believes that the statement voiced by the US Department of State indicates a doubt in the version about the suicide of the oppositionist.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 29, friends and relatives of Mekhman Galandarov, who regularly took part in the opposition actions, reported his death. According to them, Mekhman Galandarov committed suicide at the SIZO (pre-trial prison). The Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into the case on incitement to suicide, and two SIZO warders were dismissed.

According to Ogtai Gyulyalyev, the statement voiced by the US Department of State proves an increase in the international attention to the case of the Mekhman Galandarov's death.

Ogtai Gyulyalyev has noted that it is the first time when the US Department of State has expressed its attitude to the situation with human rights in Azerbaijan after Donald Trump had assumed office as the US President.
