Kokoity’s supporters protest despite promises

The action in Tskhinvali in support of Eduard Kokoity is on against the statement of his election office about refusal to hold rallies. Protesters came to the building of the Supreme Court (SC). On March 14, the SC plans to consider Kokoity's application on the refusal to register him as a presidential candidate.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that today residents of South Ossetia responded to the appeal to support Kokoity, posted in social network, and came out to support him.

In connection with the action, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has been put into the strengthened service regime, said Akhsar Lavoev, the Minister.

The election of the President of South Ossetia is scheduled for April 9. On March 4, the Central Election Commission (CEC) decided not to admit Kokoity, who headed the republic from 2001 to 2011, to the election as a candidate. According to the CEC, Kokoity has failed to permanently reside in South Ossetia in the last five years; he has provided untrue information about his property, and failed to submit documents confirming his membership in the party and his non-conviction.

On March 9, Kokoity appealed against the CEC’s decision at the Supreme Court (SC).

At the same time, the CEC of South Ossetia has registered three candidates for the presidency: the incumbent head of the republic Leonid Tibilov, the Speaker of the Parliament Anatoly Bibilov, and Alan Gagloev, a KGB officer.
