ECtHR fines Russia for banning rally in memory of Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has upheld the complaint filed by journalist Alexander Lashmankin and 22 other applicants and ordered Russia to pay them 183,550 euros for failures to sanction rallies. The mentioned rallies also include an unsanctioned rally in memory of lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 19, 2009, Stanislav Markelov was killed in Moscow after the press conference dedicated to the release from prison of Colonel Yuri Budanov, sentenced in 2003 on the charge of murdering Chechen girl Elza Kungaeva. Anastasia Baburova, a journalist of the newspaper "Novaya Gazeta", was also killed.

According to the ECtHR's resolution, the Court has revealed the violation by Russia of Article 11 on the right to freedom of assembly of the European Convention on Human Rights.

A rally in memory of Stanislav Markelov, claimed by Alexander Lashmankin in 2009, was not sanctioned by the authorities of Samara. Besides, the number of complainants also includes Lev Ponomaryov, Executive Director of the movement "For Human Rights", his deputy Evgeny Ikhlov, and Sergey Udaltsov, the leader of the "Left-Wing Front", the "RBC" reports.
