Journalist and rights defender detained in Makhachkala

Idris Yusupov, a correspondent of the newspaper "Novoye Delo" (New Business), and Sirazhutdin Datsiev, an activist of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" were detained by policemen at their exit from a mosque. Currently, they have been released from the Sovietskiy ROVD (District Interior Division) of Makhachkala.

The detention took place in Gagarin Street, said Yusupov. They were approached by a police patrol headed by Second Lieutenant Djavatkhanov, who drew up a report on them. "The reason for our detention, as Djavatkhanov said, was our suspicious appearance," said the journalist to the "Chernovik" (Draft) weekly, adding: "At the ROVD, they check our IDs and took explanatory notes from us."

When colleagues of the journalist came to the ROVD, they were told that Yusupov had not been brought there, although at that time he and Datsiev were just kept inside.
