HRC "Memorial" reports on inconsistencies in case against Karpyuk and Klykh

Today, the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial" has reported that the indictment in the criminal case against members of the UNA-UNSO contains factual errors and contradictions.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 26, in Grozny, the court was to start hearing on the merits in the case against Nikolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh accused of involvement in the combat actions in the territory of Chechnya. The trial in the case was postponed because of the absence of the jury. According to the defendants' advocates, investigators failed to provide evidence for the involvement of Nikolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh in the combat actions in Chechnya.

According to the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF), in the early 1990s, in the territory of Ukraine, a radical right-wing military political organization "UNA-UNSO" was founded. Ukrainian citizens Nikolai Karpyuk, Stanislav Klykh, Alexander Malofeev, Alexander Muzychko, and other persons became members of the "UNA-UNSO". The Supreme Court (SC) of the Russian Federation has recognized the "UNA-UNSO" an extremist organization and its activities are prohibited on the territory of Russia.

According to the HRC "Memorial", human rights defenders have analyzed the factual circumstances set out in the indictment in the criminal case against Nikolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh.

"By comparing the circumstances with each other and with external independent sources, we have detected a large number of factual errors and contradictions in the description of the events in Grozny in late 1994-early 1995," states the press release of the HRC "Memorial" received today by the "Caucasian Knot".

"Because of a large number of errors and inconsistencies, as well as their nature which is often absurd, the indictment leaves an impression of a document, drawn up in haste by incompetent people not familiar with the subject," the human rights defenders state.

The message of the HRC "Memorial" notes that "factual errors, inaccuracies and absurdities, which are numerous in the indictment, allow us to make a conclusion about the groundlessness of the indictment in general."
