Prosecutor of Hague Court initiates investigation into conflict in South Ossetia

During the 2008 conflict in South Ossetia war crimes could have been committed, Fatou Bensouda, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, believes. The prosecutor decided to seek a permit from the ICC judges to conduct a full-fledged investigation.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the ICC had requested from Russia the data of the investigation into war crimes in South Ossetia in 2008. This was stated on October 6 by Alexander Bastrykin, the head of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF).

The ICC’s Prosecutor's Office got convinced that the investigation into 2008 events, conducted by the national investigating authorities of Georgia and Russia, gave and would give no results, Simon Papuashvili, project manager of the human rights organization “International Partnership for Human Rights” told in his interview to the "Caucasian Knot". "And now the office of the prosecutor of the ICC will conduct its own investigation," said the rights defender. According to his story, if the commission of crimes during the 2008 conflict is proved, then we can expect the issuance of arrest warrants of Vladimir Putin and Mikhail Saakashvili.
