KBR installs monument to victims of political repressions

A monument to repressed residents of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) was opened in the city park of Nalchik.

The mass deportation of Balkars occurred on March 8, 1944. At least 37,713 Balkars were transported in 14 echelons to places of settlement in Central Asia. On March 28, 1957, state bodies of the Soviet Union decided to restore the statehood of the Balkar people.

Last year, at the meeting of the head of the republic Yury Kokov with activists of public organizations the issue was raised about the need to install such a monument; and its opening today is the result of that discussion, Vladimir Bitokov, the head of the administration of the head of the KBR, said at the opening of the monument.

A total of 63,180 people were repressed in the KBR; and 60,000 of them were rehabilitated, said Sufyan Beppaev, the chairman of the board of public organization of the Balkar people named "Alan".

The monument to victims of repressions was installed near the memorial complex "Eternal Flame", the "Interfax" reports. Earlier, there was a boulder in the place of the monument, near which commemoration of repressed people took place, the RIA "Kabardino-Balkaria" reports.
