Two rebels detained in Grozny
Two rebels, who had been members of the group of field commander Arbi Barayev destroyed by federal forces in the summer of 2001, were detained by Chechen law enforcers on May 20. "Yesterday, in the course of search actions in Grozny, we detained two rebels of Arbi Barayev, who had been the commander of a Wahhabi gang before 2001. Both the detainees are suspected of committing attacks on federal soldiers and republican law enforcers and murdering civilians," an officer of the Chechen interior ministry said to the Caucasian Knot correspondent on May 21. The man did not disclose names of the detained rebels in the interests of investigation. He also reported that the detainees had already been charged with membership of illegal armed units and complicity in the murder of a Grozny resident in August 2000.
