Heavily sick rights defender Intigam Aliev marks his 52nd birthday in prison, Foundation "Human Rights House" reports

International rights defenders from the Foundation "Human Rights House" have addressed the Azerbaijani authorities with a demand the release the rights defender Intigam Aliev. On November 30, Aliev marked his 52nd birthday behind bars; his health condition has seriously deteriorated, rights defenders report.

The above Foundation reports that Intigam Aliev in under arrest since August 8, 2014. In the midst of the pressure on civil society in Azerbaijan, Aliev "is one of the country's leading rights defenders who are in prison," says the website of the Foundation.

"Intigam Aliev is a renowned human rights lawyer and the head of the NGO 'Society of Legal Education'. He took part in presenting more than 200 applications to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). As a lawyer, Aliev protects more than 140 people at the ECtHR. By depriving him of his liberty, the Azerbaijani authorities also impede the right of citizens to justice," rights defenders report.

Let us note here that Aliev is a laureate of the 2013 international human rights Homo Homini Award.

The Foundation "Human Rights House" asserts that "Aliev suffers from a severe chronic disease; and he is not receiving the due medical care in prison."

Besides, four out of five lawyers, who represent Aliev's interests, were excluded from defending his rights.
