New presidential election to be held in Chechnya in September
The election of a new president of Chechnya, because of the death of Akhmat Kadyrov, will be held in September of the current year, the Caucasian Knot correspondent was told at the republican election commission.
Residents of Chechnya name the following people among those who will most likely take part in the presidential race: Ruslan Khasbulatov, the ex-speaker of the Supreme Soviet of Russia; Aslanbek Aslakhanov, the former State Duma deputy; Malik Saidulayev and Husein Dzhabrailov, the Moscow businessmen; Abubakar Arsakhanov, the banker; Bislan Gantamirov, the former mayor of Grozny and former press minister of the Chechen Republic; Salambek Maigov, the former envoy of president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria Aslan Maskhadov; and Major-General Said-Selim Peshkhoev, the former interior minister of the republic and deputy plenipotentiary in the South Federal District.
At the same time, the overwhelming majority of people in the republic are convinced that only a candidate having the support of the Kremlin can become head the Chechen Republic. Some observers even offer the opinion that Moscow can count on the son of Akhmat Kadyrov - Ramzan, who was chief of his security service until very recently.
