Leader of Armenian Helsinki Association calls upon human rights organizations 'to raise alarm'
The unwritten law not to trouble journalists and human rights activists, which is recognized all over the world, has been broken in Armenia, President of the Armenian Helsinki Association Mikael Danielian told a press conference on April 23. To remind, he was beaten by four unknown criminals in the street on March 30. Mikael Danielian called upon all human rights organizations "to raise the alarm and write to international organizations in order to inform them of what is happening in Armenia."
According to Mr Danielian, a forensic medical expert visited him in two weeks after the beating, when signs of violence had already disappeared.
Speaking about possible reasons for the beating, the human rights activist drew the journalists' attention to the fact that it had occurred right after his interview with the Azerbaijan newspaper Echo. In his interview, he said in particular that "war is the only opportunity for Kocharian today to silence the opposition."
