First session of new Georgian parliament
The first session of the newly elected Georgian parliament is taking place today, April 22.
President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili opened the session. He said that the priority tasks of the parliament were to assist with the restoration of Georgia's territorial integrity, to carry out reforms in all fields of the country's life, to improve the people's standard of living, and to liberalize the tax code.
The parliament is expected to elect new speaker and vice speakers. Nino Burdjanadze will most likely be the only candidate for the post of the speaker. Deputies are also to pass a resolution today on the situation in Adjaria and around it.
