Synagogue to be built in Grozny near "Heart of Chechnya"

The Chechen capital plan to build a synagogue; the ceremony of laying the foundation stone is scheduled for January 9. The site is in the place of the Ashkenazi synagogue that existed in the early 20th century.

"This place is not far from the mosque 'Heart of Chechnya' and the Church of Archangel Michael in the downtown," a source from the administration of Grozny told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Before early 1990s, the Chechen capital had a Jewish community. Most of its members left Chechnya before the first military campaign in the republic.

"Jews had lived in Grozny almost since its foundation," said the source adding that in the past the capital of Chechnya had mosques, a synagogue and Orthodox and Catholic churches.
