NATO Secretary General is against referendum in South Ossetia

Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, NATO Secretary General, has declared that the Alliance stands against the independence referendum and presidential election in South Ossetia to be held on November 12, the RIA "Novosti" reports.

"On NATO's behalf, I join other international leaders in rejecting the so-called "referendum" and "election" held in South Ossetia. Actions of this sort pursue the only aim - to aggravate tension in the region of South Caucasus," the statement of Mr. Secretary General runs.

Earlier, the USA voiced against the independence referendum in South Ossetia.

We remind you that on November 12 South Ossetia will elect the president of the Republic and hold the national referendum on the issue of independence.
