The document notes that during this whole time the killers of the well-known Azerbaijani journalist were not found, while the independent press is still persecuted in the country.

Elmar Guseinov, editor-in-chief of the popular in Azerbaijan magazine named "Monitor" was shot dead on March 2, 2005, at the threshold of his apartment from a pistol on an unidentified gunman who made seven shots at the journalist. This murder had shocked the public of the country.

The statement of the RwB that has arrived to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent notes that "during all these years the investigation has reached nothing, and the killers of the leading oppositional journalist, editor of the 'Monitor' magazine are still at large."

"Not only the case was stopped, but prosecutions of independent journalists and media continue. The suspects of committing the crime were neither arrested nor interrogated, which creates the atmosphere of impunity," the statement runs.
