Bagapsh: Abkhazia plans to join United State and CIS

Abkhazia is going to enter the CIS and to submit an application on joining the United State of Russia and Belarus, President Sergey Bagapsh has declared.

"I think that after signing the agreement (on cooperation with Russia), we'll apply for membership in the United State. Should there be a CIS expansion, we're ready to participate there and in the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization), but it's up to those who are members there," has told Bagapsh at a meeting with participants of "Valdai" International Debate Club.

The RIA "Novosti" reports that according to Mr Bagapsh, Abkhazia is not going to have any associated status with Russia. "This is out of the question, Russia has no claims or intention to divest anything," said Sergey Bagapsh.

According to his story, the people of Abkhazia have made their choice at the referendum and voted for independence. At the same time, President has emphasized that Abkhazia will continue building friendly relations with Russia.

Besides, Mr Bagapsh has noted that Abkhazia will be a demilitarized state. "We want to create a democratic lawful demilitarized state. We don't want to be at war with anyone," he said.
