Bagapsh is happy with Abkhazia's victory in Kodori Gorge

President of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh has announced the establishment of Abkhazia's jurisdiction in the upper section of the Kodori Gorge to be a great victory. In his television address to the people of Abkhazia, Mr Bagapsh has noted that "we've been waiting for this for the latest 15 years of our independence."

"The jurisdiction of the Abkhazian state has been restored over a part of its aboriginal territory - the upper Kodori," Sergey Bagapsh has emphasized. "For three days, the units of the Abkhazian army conducted the operation aimed to restore the territorial integrity of the Republic of Abkhazia. Today, the operation is over."

Abkhazian leader has expressed special gratitude to the leadership of the Russian Federation who "are applying enormous efforts to address many problems." "The appeals of Abkhazian leaders didn't remain unheard by Russian leaders, and they've undertaken resolute actions not to admit aggression against our country," said President Bagapsh.

Let us note here that on August 12 the Armed forces of Abkhazia completed, practically without any combat, the operation to force Georgian armed formations (deployed there in July 2006) out of the upper section of the Kodori Gorge.

Prior to start the operation, the Abkhazian party gave a chance to local population and Georgian militaries to leave the territory of the gorge. Because of fear of bombardment, practically all local residents abandoned the area, and only single elderly persons could be met there.

During the operation, not a single local resident has suffered, and not a single house was destroyed.
