Lawyers point to Timur Idalov being deprived of opportunity to work as lawyer in Chechnya

The sentence of Timur Idalov, an advocate from Chechnya, in a case on threatening a public prosecutor will be challenged. Lawyers called the deprivation of the opportunity to practice law the most severe part of the Timur Idalov’s punishment, although the term of forced labour is close to the maximum stipulated by the article.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on November 28, the court sentenced Timur Idalov to one year and 11 months of forced labour in the case on threats to a public prosecutor. The lawyer was also banned from practicing law for three years.

According to the investigators’ version, on October 3, 2022, Timur Idalov voiced “threats of violence” against the public prosecutor in the courtroom. Advocate Murad Musaev called the charge “far-fetched,” stating that Timur Idalov had an altercation with the public prosecutor and that six months later a Timur Idalov’s remark was qualified as a threat.

Advocate Abuspyan Gaitaev believes that Timur Idalov was harshly punished “for nothing.” Abuspyan Gaitaev emphasizes that the most serious punishment for Timur Idalov is to be deprived of his lawyer status.

“This will effectively deprive him of his job, all the clientele he has built up,” Abuspyan Gaitaev explained.

Let us remind you that Timur Idalov, as a lawyer, represented the interests of the Belkharoev family in the case on the assassination of Ibragim Eldjarkiev, the chief of the Ingush Centre to Combat Extremism (also known as Centre “E”). The assassination was recognized as a terror act.
