Sentence to Sochi activist Vladimir Atamanchuk upheld

The Court of Appeal in Sochi has upheld the sentence of activist Vladimir Atamanchuk, who was found guilty of libel and sentenced to 200 hours of compulsory labour.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 12, 2024, the court sentenced the 72-year-old activist, Vladimir Atamanchuk, to 200 hours of compulsory labour. Besides, he must pay 40,000 roubles in compensation to one of the victims.

On November 11, 2023, investigators closed the case of discrediting the Russian Armed Forces against Atamanchuk, but opened a criminal case for libel. He treated the new case as fabricated.

"They've really ruined my health over these two years. I myself have been treating people all my life and I don't understand who gives the right to law enforcement bodies and judges to take away health from others," Mr Atamanchuk has stated.

He is sure that his troubles will not end with this sentence. "From this day on, a new phase of bullying will begin," he believes.

Let us recall that on October 24, 2023, Atamanchuk said that law enforcers had promised to initiate a criminal case for libel against him based on a complaint from two residents with whom he had earlier took part in elections in the Krasnodar Territory. The activist noted that law enforcers offered him to admit guilt in libel in exchange for dropping the case of discrediting the Russian Army.
