Azerbaijan: trial of "Azadlyg" journalist begins

Today, the Yasamal District Court presided by Judge S. Ahmedova has held a preparatory session on the claim of Geidar Babaev, Minister of Economic Development of Azerbaijan, against the "Azadlyg" newspaper and its journalist Agyl Khalil.

The claim was filed in connection with the publication in the "Azadlyg" newspaper on August 29, 2007, of the article entitled "Was Matthew Bryza's Wedding Paid Up by Azerbaijanis?"

The publication had affirmed that an essential part of the expenses on the wedding of American diplomat Bryza with political scientist Zeino Baran was covered by Geidar Babaev. In this connection, Mr Babaev demands from the newspaper to publish a refutation. Besides, by way of a private charge, the claimant asks the Court to bring Ganimat Zakhid, editor-in-chief of "Azadlyg," and Khalil, the author of the article, to criminal liability for slander.

Ganimat Zakhid has informed the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the hearing of the case was appointed to 11:00 a.m. on October 5.
