Human rights defenders criticize Kadyrov after video with beating of Zhuravel

Ramzan Kadyrov demonstrated his disdain for the Russian laws by posting a video of his son beating arrested Nikita Zhuravel and approving that action, emphasize Marina Akhmedova and Eva Merkachyova, members of the Human Rights Council under the President of Russia.

The son of the leader of Chechnya had no right to break the law and beat an arrested person, stated Marina Akhmedova, a member of the Human Rights Council (HRC) under the President of Russia.

“We are not medieval feudal lords, and no insults to religion justify breaking the law. The punishment for this person is to be set by court, but not by the Kadyrov’s son,” she wrote in her Telegram channel.

HRC member Eva Merkachyova noted that Ramzan Kadyrov “challenged” the country’s legal system, the “Gazeta.ru” reports. The human rights defender added that she had already requested investigators to transfer Nikita Zhuravel to another region, but had not received any substantive answer.

The “Watch in Volgograd” public movement requested the investigating authorities to institute a criminal case on the beating of Nikita Zhuravel by the son of the leader of Chechnya.

“Open confession, publication of the video, and exclamations of approval from top-ranking officials of the region are a challenge to the Russian society. Right before our eyes, they spit in the face of the law and give us a direct signal, meaning that any citizen of the Russian Federation may be taken to Chechnya and judged with their fists,” note activists of the “Watch in Volgograd” public movement in its Telegram channel.
