Chechen authorities greet with silence reports about possible death of blogger Tumso

The authorities of Chechnya and the media do not comment on the possible death of Tumso Abdurakhmanov, although the assassination attempt on him two years ago caused a flurry of comments from propagandists. Lawyer Abubakar Yangulbaev suggests that Tumso Abdurakhmanov is under the protection of the Swedish authorities.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on December 1, the information about the murder of Tumso Abdurakhmanov in Sweden appeared on the Internet, while the “Vayfond” association and the Assembly of Chechens of Europe noted that those reports did not look reliable. However, on December 5, associates of Tumso Abdurakhmanov reported his murder. Shamil Albakov, a member of the Assembly of Chechens of Europe, hopes that the disappearance of Tumso Abdurakhmanov can be explained by an operation by the Swedish special services.

On February 26, 2020, Tumso Abdurakhmanov was attacked. According to the blogger, the attacker entered his apartment and started beating him with a hammer, but Tumso Abdurakhmanov disarmed the attacker. The attacker, who was identified as Ruslan Mamaev, insisted that he did not plan to kill the blogger, but attacked him because he could not disobey the people who sent him to Sweden from Grozny.

Chechen officials remain silent concerning the rumours of Tumso Abdurakhmanov’s murder six days after the first information about it appeared.

Magomed Daudov, the chair of the Chechen parliament, who was often engaged in disputes with Tumso Abdurakhmanov on social media, has also not written anything about the blogger since December 1.

Tumso Abdurakhmanov is under the protection of the Swedish authorities, lawyer Abubakar Yangulbaev suggests.

“One of the most logical versions is that Tumso Abdurakhmanov was urgently secured by the local special services due to a possible and/or impending assassination attempt ... I believe that he is alive and under reliable protection. Sweden already made the mistake when letting to attack him, and since then his security has been under control,” Abubakar Yangulbaev wrote in his Telegram channel.

The lawyer noted that “Tumso Abdurakhmanov, like other political refugees from Chechnya, is in danger every day.”
