Life convict denied compensation for custody conditions at Volgograd SIZO

Dokku Djantemirov, a native of Chechnya, claimed compensation of one million roubles for the custody conditions at the SIZO (pre-trial prison) in Volgograd, where he was fed food made from pork. The Volgograd court has upheld the refusal of compensation.

Djantemirov complained about high humidity, cold, leaky windows, through which the wind was blowing, and poor illumination. Because of all this, as the convict asserted, in 2005, he fell ill with pneumonia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in 2008, the Supreme Court (SC) of Chechnya passed a guilty verdict to the members of the so-called "Ichkerian Air Defence" Sultan Matsiev, Dokka Djantemirov, Shamsuddin Salavatov and Viskhan Khabibulaev. They were accused of a number of acts of sabotage, which resulted in the death of more than 150 Russian militaries, in particular, the destruction of a helicopter in the autumn of 2002, when four servicemen perished.

This January, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) awarded compensations to residents of Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan who had complained of torture, ill-treatment and illegal detention by law enforcers, as well as the absence of efficient investigation of these facts. Djantemirov, Matsiev, Salavatov and Khabibulaev were among the applicants.
