Health condition of Ingush elders worsens at SIZO

The Ingush activists convicted within the Magas protest case are studying the case files in order to challenge the verdict, their advocates have informed. Malsag Uzhakhov has new health problems while at the SIZO (pre-trial prison), while Akhmed Barakhoev's chronic illness has worsened, the advocates have added.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 15, 2021, the court satisfied the prosecutor's demands to sentence Akhmed Barakhoev, Musa Malsagov and Malsag Uzhakhov to nine years in prison, Ismail Nalgiev, Bagaudin Khautiev and Barakh Chemurziev – to eight years, and Zarifa Sautieva – to 7.5 years of imprisonment. The defence had hoped for softer verdicts.

The above seven Ingush protest leaders were charged with the creation of an extremist community. However, rights defenders assert that at a rally in Magas, the convicts called on the protesters to refrain from riots.

Djabrail Kuriev, one of the advocates, said that his client, the 69-year-old Malsag Uzhakhov, had problems with the pancreas added to his previous diseases.

Fatima Urusova, another advocate, said that her 67-year-old client Akhmed Barakhoev had his arthritis worsened. She did not rule out that the arthritis aggravation was caused by the absence of hot water is SIZO cells.
