Polad Aslanov stops his hunger strike on 20th day

Journalist Polad Aslanov stopped his hunger strike on the 20th day after urgent recommendations of doctors, his spouse reported. The woman believes that her husband’s protest action has partially achieved its goal, since the Supreme Court (SC) of Azerbaijan appointed a date for the consideration of an appeal.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on January 6, Polad Aslanov went on a hunger strike with the demand to reconsider his case. The journalist’s health state deteriorated sharply on the 18th day of the hunger strike. On the 19th day, Polad Aslanov was hospitalized after he fainted in the penal colony.

Journalist’s spouse Gyulmira Aslanova received a phone call from Mail Mamedov, the chief of the Medical Institution of the Penitentiary Service, who informed the woman that “the results of the Polad Aslanov’s blood tests were very bad.”

“The doctors point out that if Polad continues his hunger strike, he may remain disabled for his whole life ... They suggest that he think about his family, because even if he is released from prison, he will fall ill with an almost incurable disease and at least lose his ability to work,” Gyulmira Aslanova stated.

According to the journalist’s spouse, the husband called her later and confirmed that he had suspended his hunger strike. “Polad is grateful to the hospital doctors for their good care,” Gyulmira Aslanova noted.
