Two natives of Stavropol Territory detained within the case of Basaev's raid on Dagestan

Kairbek Bakiev and Ilkhan Kanmurzaev, natives of the Stavropol Territory, have been detained on suspicion of taking part in the attack of Basaev's and Khattab's grouping on Dagestan in 1999, the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) has reported.

The men are suspected of banditry, armed rebellion, encroachment on the lives of military servicemen and law enforcers, the press service of the ICRF has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that detentions of alleged participants in the attack committed by the grouping of Shamil Basaev and Khattab on Dagestan in 1999 still continue, more than 20 years after the attack. Thus, in September 2021, Albert Elakaev and Alimkhan Musaev, natives of the Stavropol Territory, were detained. Earlier, on May 16, the ICRF reported that more than 80 people had been convicted for taking part in Basaev's raid; the persecution of seven people, including Basaev, was stopped because of their death; and other 28 persons had been put on the wanted list.

On August 7, 1999, over a thousand armed militants, led by Shamil Basaev and Amir Khattab (Emir Khattab), a Jordanian, invaded Dagestan from Chechnya. The armed clashed continued in Dagestan for more that a month.

Let us remind you that this April, within the case of Basaev's raid on Dagestan, Alexander Ponomarenko, a 38-year-old resident of the Krasnodar Territory, was also detained. His relatives asserted that he had never been to Dagestan and had no relation to any armed formations. His advocate stated that Ponomarenko was forced to self-incriminate under torture.

Cases about participation in Basaev's and Khattab's gangs are of the same type and often falsified, Narine Airapetyan, an advocate, has noted.
