Yerevan ambulance drivers go on strike
Ambulance drivers in Yerevan have announced a strike demanding higher wages and complaining about a tight working schedule. Their bosses have referred to the pandemic as the reason for the high workload and called on the strikers to negotiate.
The strikers have stated they even have no time to eat. They go out daily to 30-40 calls, while the salary does not increase, the "News.am" writes.
One of the strikers said that the salary of an ambulance driver is not enough to support the family. According to his story, "in no country do people work 24 hours a day with such a meagre salary."
Tagui Stepanyan, the director of the "Ambulance" Closed Joint-Stock Company (CJSC), has confirmed that the drivers' salaries are not high – about 11,000 drams (USD 23) for an on duty shift.
When ambulance drivers were hired, they signed contracts that outlined all the working conditions, Ms Stepanyan has explained. "During the 2020 war, we worked with even greater workload; therefore, any ultimatums are inappropriate," she has stated.
