Caucasian experts predict danger for natives of Dagestan returned from Kazan shelter

After returning to their husbands, the young women who fled from their relatives in Dagestan and were abducted by law enforcers from a shelter in Kazan, face a risk to fall victim to “honour killings” even against the background of the publicity of their story. This opinion has been voiced by Caucasian experts.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on October 18, law enforcers forcibly took away from a crisis centre in Kazan two young women who had fled from their relatives in Dagestan. Later, the young women contacted their friends, claimed that everything was fine with them, and called on not to look for them. Svetlana Anokhina suggests that the young women made the above statements under pressure. According to the human rights defender, the young women were early married without their consent and complained about harassment by their husbands and relatives.

When a woman flees from her husband, the situation hurts the reputation of his family, says Saida Sirazhutdinova, the president of the Centre for Global Studies of Present and Regional Problems “Caucasus. World. Development”. According to her, returning of the woman to the family will no longer fully rehabilitate the honour of her husband.

An escape of a woman from her family or from her husband is considered a shame not only in the Caucasus and not only in Muslim families, notes Caucasian expert Akhmet Yarlykapov. He confirms that in some cases, such women face “honour killings.”

According to Akhmet Yarlykapov, publicity can both help and harm women.

“Public discussion of such situations often puts women in jeopardy. That inflames the husband’s side, makes him angry,” the Caucasian expert explained.

In Muslim families, divorce usually depends on a husband’s wish, Saida Sirazhutdinova says. In general, for a woman, this is “a very difficult procedure,” confirms Caucasian expert Alexei Malashenko.
