Azeri President reacts to Armenia's appeal to CSTO

Azerbaijan is updating the border with the Syunik Region of Armenia; there is no conflict there; and Yerevan's appeal to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is groundless, President Ilham Aliev has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 14, Armenia asked for military help from its allies in the CSTO in connection with the alleged penetration of Azerbaijani militaries into Armenia. Nikol Pashinyan, the acting Armenian Premier, has turned to Russian President for help.

Mr Aliev has stated that the Armenian party "demonstrates an inadequate reaction" to the process of border clarifying, the press service of the Azeri leader has reported. According to Ilham Aliev, "there were no clashes on the border; the situation is stable."

Let us remind you that Armenian experts suggested that any armed conflict in the Syunik Region is unlikely, since Yerevan is trying to resolve the incident through diplomatic means.

The movements of Azerbaijani troops on the border are taking place according to the 1970s USSR maps, Natig Djafarli, an Azerbaijani expert, believes. Experts on the Caucasus have pointed out that the USSR maps fail to unambiguously establish the borders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in the area of the Black Lake.
