Armenian analysts announce conditions for bringing Syunik problem to UN Security Council

The Armenian authorities will accept the proposal of the French President to submit the conflict in Syunik to the UN Security Council only if the situation gets out of control, but they fear the Russia's reaction, the Armenian analysts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" believe.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 12, Azerbaijani militaries advanced three kilometres deep into the Syunik Region of Armenia and, according to the administration of the city of Goris, tried to gain a foothold in the area of Black Lake. The next day, the Azerbaijani militaries again tried to advance deep into the Syunik Region, but were stopped, the Armenian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has informed.

In his talk with Nikol Pashinyan, the French President, Emmanuel Macron, stated his readiness to assist in resolving the situation with Azerbaijan and promised to speak in favour of Armenia. This was announced by Pashinyan, the acting Premier, himself at an extraordinary session of the Armenian Parliament.

"I had a telephone talk with the President of France. His position is unambiguous: he stated that he was considering the possibility of putting the issue on the agenda of the UN Security Council," Nikol Pashinyan was quoted as saying by the "Sputnik-Armenia".

Armenia will react to the French proposal if the situation in Syunik gets out of control, Armen Vardanyan, a political analyst, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

He has noted that at this stage, Armenian authorities will try to attract the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization), given their dependence on Russia. "If the situation becomes critical, the issue will undoubtedly be brought up for discussion by the UN Security Council," the political analyst believes.

Naira Airumyan, a political observer, believes that the Armenian authorities haven't accepted President Macron's proposal, as "they don't dare to contradict Russia, which wouldn't like Armenia's appeal to France."

Akop Badalyan, a political observer, has noted that Russia has a serious influence on Armenia, which, according to his version, has become more aggressive due to the geopolitical transformation, especially after the last autumn war in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to his story, an attempt to get out of this influence may entail Russia's aggressive actions.
