EU demands from Baku to return Armenian POWs

The Azerbaijani authorities must provide the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) with all the information about the Armenian prisoners of war (POWs) captured in Nagorno-Karabakh and expedite their return to their homeland, the European Union (EU) has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 26, Armenian President, Armen Sargsyan, asked the UN Secretary General to assist in the return of POWs. Armenia expects the support of the international community in the issue of returning POWs and civilians from Azerbaijan, President, Sargsyan said in his letter to the UN Secretary General.

The EU has announced the need to further strengthen the ceasefire between the parties to the Karabakh conflict. The corresponding document was published late in the evening on April 28 on the website of the Council of Europe. "This includes refraining from hostile and offensive rhetoric, the earliest completion of the return of all remaining POWs and other detainees, regardless of the circumstances of their arrest, as well as cooperation on other important issues, such as demining," the IA "News Armenia" has presented today the translation of the EU's statement.

The EU has also called on Azerbaijan to provide information regarding Armenian POWs, requested by the ECtHR.
