Armenia demonstrates its dependence on Russia’s position on Karabakh

The authorities of Armenia did not react in any way to the refusal of Russian delegates to discuss the problem around the return of prisoners of war (POWs) by Azerbaijan, as they are afraid to worsen relations with Moscow, Armenian political analysts note.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on April 19, the Armenian delegation achieved the inclusion of the problem around the return of POWs from Azerbaijan in the agenda of a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). Meanwhile, some members of the Russian delegation voted against, and some abstained.

Azerbaijan insists that the country has fulfilled the agreement and that about 60 people not handed over to Armenia are not prisoners of war, but saboteurs captured after the end of the combat actions.

Andrias Gukasyan, the leader of the Armenian Constructive Party, believes that Armenia should have expressed its regret over the Russia’s position in PACE. Andrias Gukasyan suggests that Russia also takes the side of Azerbaijan in other controversial issues on Karabakh.

Naira Airumyan, an editor of the “Lragir.am”, associates the Armenia’s silence after the voting of the Russian delegation to PACE with the unwillingness of the Armenian authorities to spoil relations with the ally. Naira Airumyan has added that the talks on Karabakh remain mainly within the trilateral format, although the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs have already announced their readiness to resume work.
