"JAMnews" tells about problems of Shurnukh villagers near Azerbaijani border

After the village of Shurnukh in the Syunik Region of Armenia occurred on the border with Azerbaijan, posts of Azerbaijani militaries are deployed near residential buildings; and the villagers are afraid to be under fire in the event of a new aggravation, the "JAMnews" writes.

The latest aggravation of the Karabakh conflict affected almost every resident of Armenia; and the truce signing, as a result of which part of Karabakh territories passed over to Baku control, had a deep emotional impact on residents of Armenia. The outcomes of the war shocked everyone, but especially sharply affected residents of the southern Syunik Region.

While driving the Goris-Kapan highway, people find themselves either in the territory of Armenia or in Azerbaijan. Before entering the Gubadli District of Azerbaijan, border guards warn drivers not to stop for five kilometres to avoid possible incidents.

After the last autumn conflict escalation, the village of Shurnukh was split among Armenia and Azerbaijan. Houses on the right side went to Azerbaijan, on the left one – to Armenia. Russian peacemakers are stationed in between.

The family of Armen Gevorgyan, like 11 others living in the village, was forced to leave their homes, which occurred on the Azerbaijani side. Gevorgyan has noted that he had built his house with his own hands for 20 years, but lost it overnight.

In Shurnukh, not only the village but also some houses are divided into two parts. Laura Tovmasyan lost two-thirds of her shed, as the border went across her land plot.

After many years of enmity, it is difficult to imagine that Armenians and Azerbaijanis will live side by side with each other, said Armen Gevorgyan, a Shurnukh villager.

The villages of David Bek and Vorotan are also close to Azerbaijan; and while the situation is calm in Shurnukh, incidents sometimes occur in other places. Residents told that Azerbaijani militaries had thrown stones at a car with Armenian number plates near the village of David Bek, the "JAMnews" has noted.
