Authorities announce housing construction for 13 families in Shurnukh

The Armenian government has allocated 700 million drams for the construction of housing and infrastructure in the village of Shurnukh for residents of the Syunik Region, whose houses were left in the territory now controlled by Azerbaijan.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 24, 2020, the Azerbaijani authorities conducted demarcation of the border in the village of Shurnukh, Syunik Region of Armenia, and demanded that a part of this village be transferred to Azerbaijan. As a result, on January 4, 2021, residents of 11 houses in Shurnukh and of one house in Vorotan were evicted.

On February 18, the Armenian government amended the law "On the 2021 Budget" to solve the housing problem of Shurnukh villagers.

Armen Gulyan, the head of the Urban Planning Committee, has noted that it was decided to allocate territory on the community's land for the construction of a new residential district for the evicted Shurnukh villagers.

The committee's experts have launched planning works in the district; and since February, earthworks have been underway to lay the road network in the new district, he has added.

"Construction of 13 residential houses will start in the near future," Mr Gulyan said, noting that it is planned to complete the construction by the end of 2021.
