Azerbaijan gives number of victims of mine explosions over the past year

Six people perished and eight others were wounded last year as a result of explosions of mines in Azerbaijan and in the conflict zone, the Azerbaijani demining agency ANAMA has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 2, Vasif Uzeir oglu Magerramov, a military serviceman of the Azerbaijani Army, perished at a mine explosion in the Gubadli District. The casualty was a fighter of special forces.

The mine clearance after the hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh can take a year. Demining of sites of military operations is a long and difficult process, Russian political analysts believe.

In 2020, seven cases of mine explosions were recorded in the Agdam, Agdjabedi, Agstafa, Djebrail, Fizuli and Garadag Districts. In these cases six people were killed and eight others were wounded, the "Report.az" has informed with reference to the ANAMA.

In total, over the past year, sappers cleared 1.6 million square meters of territory; they defused 11,450 land mines and unexploded ordnances, the AZERTADJ News Agency has reported.

Earlier, Azerbaijan reported that 2783 military servicemen perished from September 27 to November 9, 2020. The country's General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) announced 94 perished and 414 wounded civilians. According to Karabakh authorities, 1770 soldiers perished during the conflict escalation. Losses among civilians in the region amounted to 60 perished and 157 wounded people.
