Residents of Nagorno-Karabakh request US to impose sanctions against Turkey

In Yerevan, residents of Nagorno-Karabakh held a protest action in front of the US Embassy. The protestors request the US to impose sanctions against its NATO partner for interfering in the Karabakh conflict.

On October 16, a protest action took place in front of the UN office in Yerevan. During its course, participants accused the UN of being passive in resolving the Karabakh conflict and ignoring the use by Turkey of prohibited weapons. On October 19, members of the Azerbaijani and Turkish communities gathered in front of the UN headquarters in New York and requested the UN to respond to a shelling attack on the Azerbaijani city of Ganja.

On October 4, the authorities of Armenia accused Turkey of involvement in shelling attacks on villages, towns, and cities in Nagorno-Karabakh and asked the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) to respond to the situation.

Irina Safaryan, a participant of the protest action, has noted that husbands and brothers of the protesters are fighting at the frontline. According to her, the United States, being a co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, is to intervene and make every effort to establish peace in the region.

"The United States should not stay passive and make only routine, non-addressed statements," stated Liana Adamyan, another participant of the protest action. The woman considers what is happening in Nagorno-Karabakh to be the Armenian genocide, a repetition of the events of 1915.

"While turning a blind eye to what is happening today in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh, – note of the "Caucasian Knot"), the United States, which has declared itself to be the most democratic country, simply damages its own reputation," noted Marina Savadyan, a participant of the protest action.
