Law enforcers release women from Derbent who announced solo pickets

In Makhachkala, mothers of Islam Barzukaev and Gasan Kurbanov were released from the ROVD (District Interior Division) without any claims brought against them. Meanwhile, law enforcers warned women about responsibility for unsanctioned protest actions.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that today, Elena Barzukaeva and Shaganaz Rabadanova, the mothers of detained Islam Barzukaev and Gasan Kurbanov, have planned to hold solo pickets in front of the building of the Dagestani Prosecutor's Office in Makhachkala. However, at the exit of the Derbent District, law enforcers stopped the car in which the women were travelling and took them to the ROVD. The women seek medical examination of their sons and an unbiased investigation into the detainees' complaints about torture.

In March, Islam Barzukaev, a resident of Derbent, as well as Gasan Kurbanov and Mirzaali Mirzaliev (also mentioned by the media as Mirazali Mizaraliev), who were detained together with him, complained that law enforcers used torture and threats and forced them to sign confessions in a case on terrorism. Relatives of the arrested men repeatedly held protests with the demand to stop the "lawlessness" in the republic.

Shaganaz Rabadanova told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that she was kept at the ROVD for about three hours and released without any explanations concerning the reason for bringing her to the police.

The women themselves associate the detention with their planned protest action.

Two hours after their arrival at the ROVD, the women were visited by an interrogator, who questioned them and then released them. Meanwhile, the law enforcers issued warning letters to both mothers. In the issued documents, the police warn that a violation of the laws on the conduct of mass and solo protest actions results in bringing to criminal or administrative responsibility.
