Defence claims violations in case against Azerbaijani oppositionist Tofig Yagublu

The preliminary investigation into a case against oppositionist Tofig Yagublu has been completed. The politician pleads not guilty, and his advocate claimed procedural violations in the case.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Tofig Yagublu, a member of the "Musavat" Party and the coordination centre of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF), was detained on March 22. A daughter of Tofig Yagublu reported that when her father was sitting in his parked car, another car drove into his car, and people from it began to behave aggressively. After that, Tofig Yagublu was detained. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) claimed that Tofig Yagublu had a road traffic accident and attacked people. The "Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe" (ALDE) Party associates the arrest of Tofig Yagublu with the government repression against the opposition.

Human rights organizations "Human Rights Watch" (HRW) and "Amnesty International" (AI) condemned the arrest of Tofig Yagublu.

"There is no real evidence that the father caused bodily harm to the victim. The father did not get out of his car at all until the police arrived ... The father said that this case was falsified even more than the 'Ismayilli case,' in which he was sentenced to five years of imprisonment," the daughter of Tofig Yagublu claimed.
