Residents of Chechnya question ethics of payments from Kadyrov Foundation for buying out brides

Receiving money from the Kadyrov Foundation to buy out brides is quite an appropriate financial support – some local residents have supported the authorities' idea. However, their opponents assert that such help will put the newlyweds in an awkward position.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Chechen authorities had promised to allocate over 10 million roubles to the grooms, who have no money for paying traditional ransom for their brides.

Some residents interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" spoke out negatively about the allocation of money for the Kalym (ransom); however, others have supported the idea.

"I have a negative attitude to the fact that republic's leadership has decided to allocate 50,000 roubles to each of 200 or more grooms for paying the Urdo (ransom) for their brides. Such actions create dependency moods in people. Someone will get this amount, someone – not; and some aftertaste will remain. The groom, on occasion, will be reproached with the fact that he got married at the expense of Ramzan (Kadyrov) or the Foundation (named after Akhmat Kadyrov)," Sakhib has noted.

Tamara, a resident of Grozny, sticks to another opinion. "My nephew had planned to get married in April, but because of this quarantine and the ban on weddings, the date was postponed. The money that was intended for the wedding, they had to spend on food and paying communal bills, as all this time they were sitting at home without work. They learned from the local Qadi that the Foundation would allocate money for ransom only to grooms who have no money. He also helped them to receive the funds. I don't know about others, but it was a great help," said Tamara.
