Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation promises to pay ransom for 207 brides

The Chechen authorities have promised to allocate more than 10 million roubles in total to bridegrooms who are short of money to pay a traditional ransom for a bride.

All regions of Chechnya have already compiled lists of bridegrooms who are short of money to pay a ransom for a bride, and each of 207 men in need will get 50,000 roubles, the Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SAM) of Chechnya has reported on its Instagram page today.

On June 7, on the air of the "Grozny" TV Channel, the Chechen authorities have entrusted the religious leaders with the obligation to compile lists of the men in need of money to pay a ransom for a bride, explains Alikhan Akhmadov, the Qadi (a Muslim judge) for the Zavodskoy District of Grozny. "There are instructions to report about all people in need. This work has been assigned to the Mufti of the republic and all religious leaders in the districts," said Alikhan Akhmadov as translated from the Chechen language by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. The money – 10.35 million roubles in total – will be allocated to bridegrooms by the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation, the "Grozny" TV Channel reports.

Users of Instagram left sceptical comments under the post on the Muftiate's page in the social network. User 1khadijat__ criticized the activities of compiling lists of the men in need. "They told me in the spiritual administration that the lists have already been submitted. Nobody explains in plain words where to apply to, and the doors always close just in front of my nose," the user wrote.
